Everybody knows what corsets are. But you may be surprised to find out that when corsets appeared in the 12`h century they were worn by men. Only two hundred years later women started to adapt them — they wore corsets over their dresses and laced them at the front.
When wasp waists came into fashion, ladies began hiding corsets under their clothing and lacing them so tightly that it was hard to breathe.
Corsets had been becoming popular and tighter until in the 18`h century some doctors started to voice their worries about dangers of tight lacing. The discussion reached its height in the 1900s with more la¬dies concerned not only about their seemingly slim figures, but about their health as well. At the turn of the 20`h century the Rational Dress society was founded by those who thought that corsets were unnatu¬ral. But only a few women were brave enough to appear in public without corsets. Corsets did not disap¬pear completely. Today, in the age of jeans and T — shirts few women wear them, but they are occasion¬ally seen on the catwalk.
The profession of corsetiere still exists, but today's women will probably wear a «boned» dress for a few hours at a party, not for the whole day.
